I joined Southend Hospital Radio in October 2007. I had been on a sound engineering course at the college where I met Darren, who was already a volunteer. He gave me Joan, the membership secretary's number, and I arranged to come along to see what it was all about.
It was a bit scary approaching patients and asking them for requests, but the more I did it, the more confident I became.
The best thing about being part of the Tuesday request show (apart from entertaining the patients of course) is the camaraderie and friendship of the rest of the team.
It doesn't seem like charity work when you have so much fun, and it's great listening to music that you wouldn't normally listen to.
