It's definitely runs in the family this specific performing thing!
My great grandpa was the town crier of Prittlewell, so my grand says. In those days, they didn't have a radio of course, but there's nothing like the intimate one-to-one entertainment of Hospital Radio, especially.
I feel I can be my natural self, I chat on the radio as normally as possible, because I know that everyone listens on a headset. That's the difference between regular radio and us. We always had to appreciate that you are listening to us through your delicate ears!
My great grandpa used to supposedly parade his way through the town broadcasting news by yelling and ringing his large bell! Thankfully, that does not run in the family to. On the contrary, I am fairly chilled when I present the Start Of The Week show on Mondays at 6 PM.
Amazingly, like him. I do perform in the high street, though. When I'm not on the radio, I occasionally go busking and singing in town. I don't use any amplification, just like my grandpa. I keep it natural, however I do read stories out of the Echo on my radio show, so in a way I'm still giving the town the news of the day.
I love Southend Hospital Radio, there is no other medium like it in town, and I think personally, that if we as an organisation can stick to our original format, we will last forever. There's too much choice of multimedia nowadays. I reckon future listeners ever want to hear real people on the radio for a long time to come.
So when in your ears, next time eagerly trying to entertain you, remember my great grandpa... it in my genes!
